Malaika and Academia are joining forces to spread awareness about people in the Democratic Republic of Congo while supporting girls and their communities in Kalebuka. Together, we aim to create change and have an important impact in the lives of those who need it most.

As an Education Technology specialist, Academia want to support Schools and Communities not only in the UK, but worldwide. Malaika’s work touched the hearts and minds of us all at Academia, we couldn’t wait to get involved and work with the Malaika team!

ABOUT MALAIKA

Founded in 2007 by Noëlla Coursaris Musunka with an amazing, innovative team, Malaika has grown into a fully-functioning ecosystem that consists of:

A free, accredited school that provides a comprehensive education to 370 girls

A community center that offers a range of programs to 5,000 youth and adults

A clean water program with 20 wells that services over 30,000 people each year

A sustainable agricultural program that helps provide two nutritious meals each day to students and staff

Malaika’s community-driven approach serves as a symbiotic model that can be replicated on a global scale in communities and organisations throughout Africa and the world.

MALAIKA’S IMPACT

Their community-driven model has been integral to our success over the last 13 years since our founding. Through a comprehensive, local approach, an entire village has undergone a transformative ripple effect. And it all starts with education: an educated woman is more likely to give back to her community, to inspire others to attend school, and to cultivate a sense of independence among both her peers and the next generation.

LIFESAVING INFASTRUCTURE

Malaika has even built lifesaving, essential infrastructure for the community. Each year, their 20 wells supply fresh, clean water to over 30,000 people, reducing disease and illness.

As well as spreading knowledge, tools and tips and leading by example. They grow organic fruit and vegetables on the school premises, which go towards providing two nutritious meals per day for all staff and students which are often the only two meals they may receive.

THRIVING COMMUNITY

Outside of the school gates, they ensure the entire community thrives. Their Kalebuka Football for Hope Centre, opened in 2013 in partnership with FIFA, provides a hub of learning for over 5,000 youth and adults each year.

From free literacy and vocational education to sports programs and regular access to the internet, they are empowering lives from the ground up.

At Malaika, they believe that this community-driven model can, and should, be adopted on the global stage and Academia want to help this drive.

MALAIKA & ACADEMIA

The Malaika School provides a free primary and secondary education to 370 girls. (With daily classes taught in French and English, the robust curriculum covers maths, science, information technology, the arts and much more). They equip the girls with the belief to envision a brighter tomorrow and the resources needed to get there.

At Academia, we are proud to endorse women in technology and applaud the exceptional female employees who are changing and challenging what is historically a male-dominated industry. Workplace diversity is vitally important to Academia across all areas of our business. We believe a gender-diverse workforce is vital to our success. That is why Academia nurtures a culture of inclusivity and invest in developing females in tech today – to motivate the technologists and engineers of the future.

HOW TO DONATE

With over 17 years’ experience in supplying technology to educational institutions.  We are fortunate to be able to appreciate the impact IT can have on students. That’s why, we asked ourselves “How can we ensure that every student and teacher has the technology, infrastructure and resources they need to learn and thrive in their community and beyond?”

It is imperative that we hone our efforts in driving sustainability and mindfulness into all our operations. We work hard to minimise our carbon footprint, both internally and through our supply chains. For example, we have our own IT Hardware Recycling company, who recycle and refurbish devices to maximise residual value for our customers and not simply disposing of legacy technology. Further to this, we are transparent in our supply chain operations and take great care in working with sustainable partners. For example, we have recently been awarded 4 Stars by HP as part of their Partner Sustainable Impact Award programme.

As well as being mindful about our sustainability and environmental impacts, we work with charities across the UK raising awareness and donating to various charitable causes, ranging from hospices (Haven House), cancer research and treatment support (Macmillan, Cancer Research UK, Movember) and environmental organisations (netpositive, Ecologi) to spark thought, drive change and give back.
