Durham University – Apple Device Management

Durham University is one of the oldest Universities in the UK and is a proud member of the Russell Group, providing world class education to over 17,000 students. Durham is consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities, as shown by its World Top 100 position in two influential global league tables.

The Challenge
With a growing infrastructure of Apple devices, the University’s central IT department decided to invest in a function to centrally and remotely manage their suite of Apple technology. This solution was aimed at relieving strain on the internal IT department and streamlining focus on urgent and critical tasks.

The Solution
Academia recommended Jamf because it is a secure and reliable device management solution and very popular amongst Higher Educational establishments. The IT team selected the cloud hosting option and Jamf is now the default configuration for all macOS devices purchased by the University.

With Academia hosting their Jamf estate, we can take the pressure off the University’s IT department and provide control of the day-to-day management of the solution. In adopting the Jamf set up, Academia also fulfilled the mandatory JumpStart training element for Durham University staff. This consisted of a 3 day onsite deep-dive training session into every element of using Jamf Pro as a management framework. The session also included training for the University’s key support staff in both macOS and Jamf essentials ahead of the launch of the service.

Academia are also on hand to provide regular and ad-hoc assistance to the Durham University IT department, where required.

It is expected that the management controls in place will help secure University assets going forward, ensuring their residual value is protected.

The service to date from Academia has been second to none, they have a deep understanding of Jamf and all things Apple. They have supported the University in ensuring its changes to the supply and build of Apple devices were executed successfully.” – Peter Chrichard,

Technical Service Delivery Manager at Durham University.
